Get yourself a database

This is elementary marketing and so easy to do.  All you need to do is ask your customers at the time of purchase to fill in a form.  It may be in the form of a survey, a checklist, or a simple questionnaire advising your customer that you wish to keep them in touch with product information.  Once you have the information you need you are then able to take advantage of it – see the feature article for some examples.

If you don’t have a retail point of sale, then you need to be a little more creative to collect your database.  I am presently in the process of building a database in the Bay of Plenty/Coromandel area.  I could go out and buy a database, but the problem with that is that I won’t necessarily get people representing my target market.

So, with the help of Sara Reid from GFM Marketing, we have decided to run a Facebook competition offering a draw prize of a free voucher for my services to anybody who signs up for my newsletter.  It will only be targeted at my chosen geographical area, and because the prize relates to my services, it follows that the majority of people signing up for my newsletter will be interested in what I have to offer.

Facebook may not be appropriate for your business, but there are many ways that you can build a database.  Give me a call if you need help with that.
