Local bakery makes good

Earlier this year, I went into the Waihi Bakery – a place that I’m extremely attracted to by its wide array of goodies on display.  I got chatting to the owner, Vic Luon who explained that he and Phita had just taken over the business.

I commented that it was good that he hadn’t changed the range of products, and he said that he was going to keep most of it, but was waiting until the pie awards coming up were announced before he made any changes.  He had previously won awards when working with his brother in Turangi and wanted to win one in his own right as a platform to increase the range.

In August 2017 it was announced that Vic and Phita had won three awards - a gold medal for their steak and cheese pie, and top six for bacon & egg, and mince.

So the Waihi Bakery is on the map and is making the most of its publicity.  I have seen two articles, one of which is here

And people have flocked into the bakery to congratulate the owners and try their wares.  I note that the range of pastries has increased substantially and they will only go from strength to strength from here.

Definitely an opportunity found – and on my own door step.
